A weed is only a flower in diguise.

Happy Earth Day from this side of town.

To celebrate earth day, Mia has officially started her own garden about a week ago. Last night, I transferred her small garden from it's plastic container into an actual pot. She is growing some interesting plants this year! There are cucumbers, lettuce, marigolds and sunflowers all sharing the same soil inside our home. She seemed particularly excited this morning when she was able to decorate her new pot with princess stickers!  This is only the beginning of our little gardening adventure together. There are some chamomile growing in their own pot and a mix of wild flowers in another container. I'm hoping to transfer them all into some flower boxes that have yet to make their way into our lives! Here's hoping.

what are you doing for Arbor day?

Another random thought... why is there only ONE day declared for our earth and reminding us to plant trees? Is there a reason behind this particular day being the day to celebrate. Shouldn't every day be with nurturing, protecting and defending our one and only life source? Mother Earth.  Arbor Day is a holiday in which individuals and groups are encouraged to plant and care for trees. It originated in the United States in 1872. Many countries now observe it on various dates, depending on climate and suitable planting season, usually in the spring (as observed on wikipedia).

  • United States : Arbor Day was founded in 1872 by J. Sterling Morton in Nebraska City, Nebraska. By the 1920s, each state in the United States had passed public laws that stipulated a certain day to be Arbor Day or Arbor and Bird Day observance.

  • The national holiday is celebrated every year on the last Friday in April; in Nebraska, it is a civic holiday. Each state celebrates its own state holiday. The customary observance is to plant a tree. On the first Arbor Day, April 10, 1872, an estimated one million trees were planted.[3]
I think this is an incredible idea and my statement about "every day being earth day" doesn't quite hold as much concrete. One million trees? The differences that could be made if so many trees were replenished on our Earth every year.  What a difference.....
